Poetry, Pain, and Procrastination: Talk 

Chronic procrastination is not due to laziness or poor time-management; it is a compulsion to avoid ‘doing’ as a subconscious act of self-protection. This behaviour is triggered by the part of the brain that operates our fight/flight response.  Adults who experienced a childhood that felt unsafe, or unstable in any way, are likely to have a procrastination problem. Just having one critical family member is likely to change our ability to function in the world.

In this talk I present the findings of my MSc research which discovered a link between childhood trauma and chronic procrastination; and how personal writing can help to re-wire the brain’s immobilising fear responses. The talk will include research, extracts from my personal journals, and poetry. Some aspects of this talk will include references to my experience of childhood abuse.

How to Stop Procrastinating: 6-Week Course

This course, based on my MSc research, will help you to understand why you procrastinate. I will explain why nearly all self-help books will not work for you, and what you can do to end this cycle of self-sabotage. You will be given the information you need to penetrate the force-field of any unpleasant task by collaborating with your brain, and by using the power of your own creativity and intuition. Take control of 2020 and unlock your potential! This is course is also available on Thursday evenings, see below.

Filling the Void of Emotional Neglect: 6-Week Course

As adults we often carry burdens; some of these were given to us by parents or care-givers who didn’t respond adequately to our physical and emotional needs in childhood.  If you have always felt, deep down, that you weren’t good enough, or that you don’t deserve to succeed, then the chances are that your inner child needs some help.

This course will give you the tools you need to re-parent yourself back to wellbeing; to help you remove the shame that is not yours to bear; to give yourself the encouragement, support and love that you deserve. This course will use a variety of techniques, such as journaling, story-telling, expressive writing and poetry. We also talk a lot. No previous experience or skills are necessary, just a notebook and pen.
